π Parent Poll: Emotional Regulation at Home
We'd love to hear about your experiences with emotional regulation! Please take a moment to answer our quick poll:
What's the biggest emotional regulation challenge you face with your child? |
π§ Expert Corner
Dr. Daniel Siegel, child psychiatrist and author of "The Whole-Brain Child," emphasizes the importance of connecting with your child emotionally before trying to correct behavior. He suggests using the phrase "connect and redirect" to guide your parenting approach.
Parent Tip: Remember, emotional regulation is a skill that develops over time. Be patient with your child (and yourself!) as you work on building these abilities together.
ποΈ Family Activity
π« Emotion Jar
Create an "Emotion Jar" with your child to help them visualize and manage their feelings:

Take a clear jar or plastic container.
Fill it with water.
Add different colors of glitter, each representing a different emotion (e.g., red for anger, blue for sadness, yellow for happiness).
When your child is experiencing strong emotions, have them shake the jar.
As they watch the glitter swirl and slowly settle, explain how our emotions can feel chaotic at first but eventually calm down.
Use this time to practice deep breathing or other calming techniques
Tip: The Emotion Jar can be kept in an easily accessible place, allowing children to use it whenever they need to process their emotions. It's an engaging, hands-on approach to emotional regulation that combines visual, tactile, and cognitive elements to help children better understand and manage their feelings.
π§ Movie Pick
Zootopia
This animated Disney film offers a great opportunity to discuss emotions, prejudice, and personal growth. The main character, Judy Hopps, experiences a range of emotions as she pursues her dream and faces challenges. The movie provides excellent talking points about managing disappointment, perseverance, and the importance of understanding others' feelings.
π’ Podcast Recommendation
"Emotion Motion" by Sesame Street Short episodes exploring different emotions through stories and songs.
